Ada dua jenis numbers dalam bahasa Inggris yaitu cardinal numbers dan ordinal numbers.
Cardinal numbers digunakan untuk menyatakan jumlah, misalnya one, two, three, eleven, twelve, thirty, one hundred, five hundred, one thousand, one hundred thousand, one million, etc.
Sedangkan ordinal numbers digunakan untuk menyatakan urutan, misalnya first, second, third, eleventh, twelfth, thirtieth, hundredth, five hundredth, thousandth, hundred thousandth, millionth, etc.
Contoh cardinal dan ordinal numbers dalam kalimat:
- There are twenty five people in the room.
- He was the fourteenth person to win the award since 1934.
- Six hundred thousand people were left homeless after the earthquake.
- I must have asked you twenty times to be quiet.
- He went to France for the third time this year.
Istilah numerals juga biasa digunakan menggantikan istilah numbers.
