Distributives

Distributives digunakan untuk menunjukkan sekelompok orang/benda atau suatu bagian (anggota) dari suatu kelompok. Kata-kata yang dipakai sebagai distributives adalah all, both, half, each, every, either, dan neither.

Kata-kata tersebut menunjukkan berbagai cara berbeda dalam melihat seseorang atau sesuatu yang menjadi bagian dalam sebuah kelompok. Dan juga mengungkapkan bagaimana setiap bagian dalam kelompok itu menyebar, bersama-sama atau terbagi.


All
Penggunaan kata all dapat dirumuskan sebagai berikut:
(1) All + Uncountable noun or Countable noun in the plural
(2) All + the + Uncountable noun or Countable noun in the plural
(3) All + my, your, etc. + Uncountable noun or Countable noun in the plural
(4) All + this, that + Uncountable noun
(5) All + these, those + Countable noun in the plural
Contoh:
- All cheese contains protein.
- All children need affection.
- All the people in the room were silent.
- Have you eaten all the bread?
- I’ve invited all my friends to the party.
- I’ve been waiting all my life for this opportunity.
- Who’s left all this paper on my desk?
- Look at all those balloons!


Both
Penggunaan kata both dapat dirumuskan sebagai berikut:
(1) Both + Countable noun in the plural
(2) Both + the + Countable noun in the plural
(3) Both + my, your, etc. + Countable noun in the plural
(4) Both + these, those + Countable noun in the plural
Contoh:
- Both children were born in Italy.
- He has crashed both (of) the cars.
- Both (of) my parents have fair hair.
- You can take both (of) these books back to the library.
- I like both (of) those pictures.


Half
Penggunaan kata half dapat dirumuskan sebagai berikut:
(1) Half + a + Uncountable noun or Countable noun in the plural
(2) Half + the + Uncountable noun or Countable noun in the plural
(3) Half + my, yours, etc. + Uncountable noun or Countable noun in the plural
(4) Half + this, that, these, those + Uncountable noun or Countable noun in the plural
Contoh:
- I bought half a kilo of apples yesterday.- You can have half (of) the cake.
- She gave me half (of) the apples.
- I've already given you half (of) my money.
- Half (of) his books were in French.
- Half (of) these snakes are harmless.
- You can take half (of) this sugar.


Kata of harus ditambahkan bila all, both dan half diikuti oleh kata ganti (pronouns), misalnya: all of you, both of us, half of them. Penambahan ini umumnya juga dapat diberlakukan (meski tidak selalu) pada aturan-aturan yang telah disebutkan di atas, kecuali aturan no (1).


Each, every, either, dan neither biasa digunakan bersama dengan singular nouns, dan diletakkan sebelum nomina. Dengan menambahkan kata of sesudahnya, each, either dan neither juga dapat digunakan bersama dengan plural nouns.

Each digunakan untuk menyatakan anggota/bagian suatu kelompok sebagai individu. Sedangkan every, untuk menyatakan sebuah kelompok yang didalamnya terdiri dari individu-individu. Disamping itu, every juga sering digunakan didepan ungkapan waktu untuk menunjukkan rutinitas atau kebiasaan. Untuk either dan neither, dipakai untuk membicarakan antara dua hal atau benda, either digunakan untuk pernyataan positif, sedangkan neither untuk pernyataan negatif.

Contoh penggunaan each, every, either, dan neither:
- Each child received a present.
- Each of the children received a present.
- Every child in the world deserves affection.
- Every third morning John goes jogging.
- This magazine is published every other week.
- Which chair do you want? Either chair will do.
- I can stay at either hotel; they are both good.
- There are two chairs here. You can take either of them.
- Neither chair is any good; they’re both too small.- Which chair do you want? Neither of them - they're both too small.
